Trans Rights = Civil RightsCanada’s House of Commons passed a bill this week that would make it illegal to discriminate against transgender people.

Sponsored by New Democrat Randall Garrison, the measure was approved by a vote of 149-137. It received support from key members of Canada’s Conservative Party, which has had a dicey record on rights for the country’s LGBT community. (Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird, however, has been vocal in condemning anti-gay regimes worldwide.)

“Today, New Democrats are proud to have contributed to ensuring equal protection under the law from discrimination and hatred based on gender identity,” said Garrison on Wednesday. “Transgender and transsexual citizens are among the most marginalized and are too often victims of harassment and acts of violence.”

Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his cronies, however, opposed the bill—claiming it would enable pedophiles to lurk in public toilets.

“These constituents feel that it is the duty of the House of Commons to protect and safeguard our children from any exposure and harm that would come from giving a man access to women’s public washroom facilities,” declared Conservative MP Rob Anders.

Wait, what?

You don’t want to protect trans people because child molesters will prey on little girls in the bathroom? But you people are the ones who claim all pedophiles are gay. Make up your mind.
